About Real Estate in Maitland, Florida

Maitland is located on the border of Orange and Seminole County. Located directly across I-4 and a few minutes north of Orlando. Its location, combined with a perfect Florida climate, friendly people, and small-town ambiance makes Maitland a beautiful place to call home.

Maitland, Florida has many beautiful lakefront homes. These lakefront homes offer fantastic sunsets and sunrises and provide ample opportunity for boaters and wildlife watchers. Many of these lakes feature adjoining or surrounding parks, and most Maitland neighborhoods are within walking or biking distance of a lake.

A Brief History of Maitland Florida

Maitland is rich in history. In 1838 a fort was established and named Fort Maitland after captain William Seton Maitland, a hero of the Seminole Wars. At that time, the only way of getting to Central Florida was by boat from Jacksonville down the St. Johns River to Fort Mellon (Sanford), then by horse or foot. Fort Maitland was a resting stop between Fort Mellon and Fort Gatlin (Orlando). Part of the Old Black Bear Trail which ran from Montreal, Canada to St. Petersburg, Florida, is now Maitland Avenue. After the Indian wars the fort was torn down. The natural spring waters and canopy of pine trees in the area continued to bring settlers. They began buying large tracts of land and after clearing sections they planted citrus trees which has been the main industry for decades. The railroad was extended from Jacksonville to Maitland for distribution. Credit: Maitland A Community for Life

Maitland Florida

In the late 1970’s a large office park was developed, ‘Maitland Center’. This area close because of its close proximity to Interstate 4 gave Maitland the distinction as a business center and home to many companies that wanted to have Central Florida headquarters and offices. Due to the number of companies that call Maitland home, Maitland has been a highly desirable place to live for professionals who do not want a long commute.

Since 2010 Maitland has added even more restaurants and shopping venues. Locals would share that Maitland is very appealing because of its central location. A short 20 minute drive from Maitland will take you to Lake Mary to the north or Sand Lake Road to the south. Driving into Downtown Orlando will only take you a short 7 minute drive thanks to the new express lane that was opened on I-4 in 2022.

The City of Maitland is the oldest municipality in Central Florida. The Maitland Art Center was founded in 1937 by sculptor Andre Smith. This center is still listed on the National Register of historic places and features an open air chapel that is a popular venue for weddings. In addition to the Arts Center Maitland also has a rich History Museum.

Activities for All Ages

Maitland has plenty of activities for people of all ages. It is home to Central Florida’s only full-time independent movie theater, Enzian Theater. A short distance from the Enzian is ‘Lake Lilly’. At this popular lake many events are held. The Maitland Rotary hosts the Maitland Art Festival each year and this is a well-attended event each year. Downtown Maitland, next to City Hall, is an area that has been revitalized in the past 5 years. Full of popular restaurants and other mixed use buildings, this is a fun area to visit and eat outdoors. On the weekends this area holds a popular Farmers Market full of vendors and local businesses.

The city of Maitland straddles interstate I-4. On the west side of the highway there are a lot of business centers, retail stores and complexes. On this same side of the city there is a large health and fitness facility called the RDV Sports Complex. This is a state-of-the-art multipurpose sports and recreation facility that houses the area’s only ice skating rink. This facility was also the NBA’s Orlando Magic’s training facility for many years.

When you cross over the exchange and head into the east side of Maitland you will find more of the city’s residential neighborhoods. With several gated communities and subdivisions centered on local lakes and waterways, Maitland offers some of the prettiest homes in the area. Often times when someone can’t find the perfect location in Winter Park, Maitland is the next area they will next explore.
