On March 9 the Orange County Commission voted down a controversial plan that would have developed a 1,440 acre, 100-year old cattle ranch east of the Econlockhatchee River into a $1.2 billion mixed-use community similar to Baldwin Park located in Orange County near downtown Orlando.  The proposed plan included 5,000 homes with 20% work force housing, 150,00 sq.ft of retail, 922,000 sq. ft. of office space, a 1.1million- sq. ft. research park and 355 acres of parks, trails and open space.

The board voted 6-1 against transmitting the proposed plan stating the need for a bridge over the Econ River would cause that area's rural character to change by driving more development to the area.
