Neighborhood Spotlight: SANFORD
Over a century before a famous mouse made his way to Central Florida and changed the landscape forever, there was Sanford. Located right off the St John’s River on the shore of picturesque Lake Monroe, it has always been a hotbed of commerce.
Today, Sanford is easily accessible by land and air, as well. Conveniently located right off I-4, and on both the Sunrail line and a scenic Amtrak route, Sanford is also home to quite possibly the most easily navigated International Airport in the country.
At just shy of 60,000 residents, Sanford is Seminole County’s largest city and its county seat. In addition to public sector jobs and the legal community, Sanford employers run the gamut from medical to technology, from engineering to aviation. In addition to the larger employers, there are also a number of up and comers, startups and burgeoning businesses eager to grow along with the city. Sanford isn’t resting on its laurels, though. It is actively soliciting the caliber of employers who will bring even more quality jobs and great value to the community. A quick glance at the Economic Development page on the city’s website identifies a plethora of attractive business incentives available to new potential employers.
Sanford boasts some excellent schools, over two dozen parks, a storied sports complex, the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens and a beautiful downtown area with cobblestone streets and stately oaks draped with drooping moss. An iconic clock that dates back to the late 1800s often serves as a gathering spot for friends before brunch or an evening pub crawl.
There is so much to do by the waterfront. People walk, of course, but there’s also a free trolley that allows them to hop on and off while making their way around the charming downtown area.
For diners, the Orlando Sentinel dubbed Sanford the region’s hottest food scene citing chef driven restaurants as diverse as Tennessee Truffle, The Smiling Bison and The District which operate alongside, a more casual local favorite, Hollerbach's Willow Tree Cafe, where patrons can enjoy pork schnitzel and other German favorites while listening to raucous laughter and and a live accordian player. There are also coffee shops, restaurants that offer hearty breakfast fare, microbreweries and great places to grab an appetizer and listen to live music.
Local favorite watering holes include Bitters & Brass, the Corona Cigar Company & Montecristo Lounge and Tuffy’s Bottle & Wine Shop, home to a marvelous patio with an outdoor bar, plenty of space to mingle and some unique, more intimate seating nooks: a gleaming airstream trailer and a landlocked airboat. There’s also a hidden gem inside the bottle shop called The Suffering Bastard, a small tiki bar that operates almost like a speakeasy.
Downtown Sanford plays host to many events and festivals, but there is recurring fun to be had, as well. Every Saturday, there’s a farmer’s market where shoppers buy fresh produce and homemade soaps and jewelry. On the second Thursday of the non-summer months, there’s an evening street party called Alive After 5 billed as an event to celebrate local artisans and the renowned culinary scene. The third Saturday of each month brings the Sanford Art Walk, a juried art show in the History Sanford Welcome Center where each month artists submit pieces that reflect that month’s theme. Art is sold, artists and art lovers mingle, and musicians show the crowd their chops.
Of course, there is a traditional mall close to the Interstate, the Seminole Towne Center and the adjacent outdoor shopping area, The Marketplace at Seminole Towne Center, but Sanford is known throughout Central Florida for its antique stores and specialty shops. There is a general store and an apothecary. There are dress shops and vintage clothing stores. There are galleries that offer local art and all manner of niche stores featuring home decor, industrial hardware, gifts, music and books. Should one be in the market for designer, homemade marshmallows, the city offers that as well in the form of Wondermade, a Sanford-based purveyor of sticky sweet goodness that ships its delicacies all over the world and sells locals it’s ware from its inviting storefront and cafe.
Nearby is a lovely marina and a bustling riverwalk populated by jogging strollers, chatting friends and competitive runners. Sanford is a charming, vibrant community situated equidistant from the beach and downtown Orlando and within easy reach of the theme parks. It’s a wonderful place to build a life.
